🌻🌻🌻 Sunflower cultivation

🤚🏿Classification

Family: Asteraceae
Genus: Helianthus
Species: Helianthus annuus

🌻SOIL CHOICE AND PREPARATION

The choice of varieties is the only solution in organic farming to fight against fungal diseases.

🌻Type of soil: sunflower is adapted to all types of soil but preferred well drained soil rich with organic matters .

🌻SEEDING CONDITIONS

🤚🏿Sowing date

Sunflower sowing must be carried out when the soil is well warmed up. You can sow between 1 to 4 times a year. The number of campaigns depends on your agro-ecological zone.

🤚🏿 Seed density

The conventional recommended density is 60,000 to 70,000 seeds/ha, for a population target of 50,000 to 60,000 plants/ha.

🤚🏿Sowing depth

The sunflower is sown between 3 to 4 cm deep. 2 to 3 cm in sloping ground. 4 to 5 cm in clay soil (to find humidity).

🤚🏿FERTILIZATION

Nitrogen: sunflower taproot, makes it good to used nitrogen in the soil since it is able to fetch it from deep down. on plots that regularly receive organic inputs get to us (Agro-food FM) for organic fertilizer.
Phosphorus and potassium ions
Sunflower is a crop whose potassium needs are significant, a supplement of around 50 kg/ha of K2O can be useful if the soils are poor in potassium. .as the culture is not very demanding in phosphorus since it’s not a tuber, spreading compost or regular additions of organic matter are sufficient to provide the necessary quantity of P2O5 to the culture.

🤚🏿 IRRIGATION

Sunflower is a crop that is tolerant of dry conditions. However, 1 to 2 turns of water (150 to 200 mm) will be well valued during the maturity phase (beginning and end of flowering).

🤚🏿 PHYTOSANITARY PROTECTION

Slugs and wireworms: avoid cloddy soils, sowing too early, badly buried or badly decomposed straw residues. Also avoid planting the crop after a fallow period.

🌻HARVEST

Harvesting is done when the back of the capsule turns from yellow to brown, the florets fall off on their own and the stem turns from green to light beige. It is advisable to clean the harvest before storage to avoid mold problems…
